Five Right-Click Tricks

As you certainly know, the right mouse button brings up what is known as the “context menu.” As the name implies, the choices available on the menu differ according to the current situation.

Well, here are 5 tips involving context menus that you may not know.

On thing you may not have noticed is that one item in every context menu is usually presented in bold. This is the default action that is taken when the left mouse button is used.

Tip #1: If you are ever in doubt about what will happen when you double-click on something (with the left mouse button), then use the right mouse button to bring up the context menu, and look for the item in bold.

Right-click also works with click and drag operations. Try this the next time you do a click and drag: Instead of clicking with the left mouse button, and then dragging the object, use the right mouse button. When you finished dragging (i.e. when you do the drop), a context menu will appear (a different one, specifically for dragging). This shows you all of the actions that are available for the combination of the object that you are dragging and the location you have dragged it to. Once again, the default action will be shown in bold. This is the action that normally occurs when you use the left mouse button to do the click-and-drag.

Tip #2: If you are ever in doubt about what will happen when you click-and-drag an object (with the left mouse button), then use the right mouse button to perform the dragging, and then look for the action that is in bold.

When might you be in doubt? Well, in the case of dragging files around within the Windows Explorer, two of the possible actions are Move and Copy. These two take turns being the default action, depending on the drop zone. If you are dragging a file to a different location on the same to disk drive, then Move is the default action, but if you drag it to a different to disk drive altogether, then Copy is the default action.

Another option available when using drag-and-drop in Windows Explorer is to create a shortcut to the object, rather than copying or moving the object itself.

Tip #3: Use right-click-and-drag to quickly create a shortcut to an object on your desktop. This will leave the actual object in its original (proper) location, yet give you convenient access to it from the desktop.

Tip #4: A corollary to Tip #3 — Using right-click-and-drag to create shortcuts is particularly handy when dealing with batch files. When you create a shortcut to a batch file it gives you more control over executing the batch file then simply double-clicking on the batch file itself. This is because the shortcut contains adjustable properties specifically for this purpose. So, after creating a shortcut, right-click on the shortcut, select the Properties option, and then adjust them as necessary.

Tip #5: Have you ever accidentally dragged an object to the wrong location? Just as you let go of the mouse button, your hand twitches, and the cursor ends up in the next file folder over. Depending on how much work it was to select the files being dragged (perhaps with lots of Ctrl+Click and Shift+Clicks), this can be a real nightmare. The solution to this is to use the right mouse button to do the dragging. When you let go of the right mouse button, the context menu pops up. One of the choices there is Cancel. The destination gets “locked in” when you let go of the mouse button, so if the wrong location is locked in, then all you have to do is click on Cancel and try the drag again. Otherwise, go ahead and select the action that you wanted to perform in the first place. (Probably the one in bold.) source

Restarting Windows Without Restarting Your PC (Vista or XP)

A modern PC with Vista Home Edition takes about one and a half minutes to boot. An older machine with XP is about the same. That’s 30 seconds for the PC itself (the BIOS) to boot up, plus a minute for the Windows operating system to boot. Sometimes, you need to reboot Windows (e.g. when installing new software), but there is no need to restart BIOS, too. However, the default is to reboot both. (That’s called doing a “cold boot,” rather than a “warm boot.”) There’s a trick that works on both XP and Vista to get it to do a warm boot instead, thus saving you 30 seconds per cycle.

The trick is to hold down the SHIFT key when invoking the restart.

Windows Vista: Select Start, then hover over the right arrow that is to the right of the padlock icon until the pop-up menu appears that contains “restart” as one of it’s choices. Hold down the SHIFT key while clicking on the “restart” choice.

Windows XP: Select Start. Select “Shut Down…”. Change the drop-down combo box under “What do you want the computer to do?” to “Restart”. Hold down the SHIFT key while clicking on the “OK” button. source

Auto logon for Windows XP

Would you rather not have to log on after your computer starts? If you’re the only person who uses your computer, you can make life a little easier by skipping the Welcome screen completely and having Microsoft Windows XP take you straight to your desktop.

To automatically log on to Windows XP upon startup

1.Click Start, and then click Run.

Note: Remember your user name at the top of the Start menu, because you’ll need it later.

Start menu with Run selected

2.In the Open box, type control userpasswords2 and click OK.

Run dialog box

3.Clear the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer check box. Click OK.

User Accounts dialog box

4.Click the User name box, type the user name that was displayed on the Start menu in step 1. If you normally type a password to log on, type your password in both the Password and Confirm Password boxes. Otherwise, leave these boxes blank. Click OK.

Automatically Log On dialog box

Auto logon now allows anyone to start and use your computer without typing a password.

Note: Keep in mind that you should not enable auto logon if you need privacy for any files on your computer. If you need to maintain privacy, create separate user accounts for everyone in your home, and protect your account with a password.

How To Make A Shutdown Timer

METHOD # 1

Right click on your desktop and choose "New=>shortcuts".
In the box that says "Type the location of the shortcut",
type in "shutdown -s -t 3600" without the quotation marks and click next. Note: 3600 are the amount of seconds before your computer shuts down. So , 60secs*60mins=3600secs.

Make up a name for the shortcut and you're done.
You can change the icon by right clicking=>properities=>change icon=>browse

TO ABORT:
To make an abort key to stop the shutdown timer just create another shortcut and make
the "location of the shortcut" to " shutdown -a" without the quotes.

METHOD # 2

{EASIER THAN THE PREVIOUS ONE}
Here is another trick to shutdown at a specific time, for example you wish to shutdown at 11:35am. Type this in
start=>Run
Type Code: at 11:35 shutdown -s
TO ABORT:
Code: shutdown -a

You can also add pictures or HTML documents (Web pages) that are stored on your computer using the

When you mouse over the top of a Web page, buttons that allow you to minimize and maximize the page will appear. You can also grab one edge of the page to drag it to a smaller or larger size.

Automate The Installation Of Windows XP

You can create a CD that can install Windows XP automatically, putting in all the details and answering all the dialog boxes.

The secret behind this is the answer file, which tells Windows what to do while it's installing. The answer file can be created using Windows setup manager.

Using this tool, you can make the answer file so powerful that you can even tell Windows to include or exclude individual components, set the display resolution, and more.

Here's the Steps involved in creating XP Automated Installation Disc :

Step 1: To begin with, insert your Windows XP installation CD into the drive and copy the entire contents of the CD to a new folder on your hard disk.

Step 2: Navigate to the Support > Tools folder on the CD and double-click the Deploy.cab file. Copy all the files to a new folder on your hard disk.

Step 3: The crucial part begins now, creating the answer file. To execute the windows setup manager, double click the Setupmgr.exe file from the contents of the Deploy.cab, which you just copied onto the hard drive.

Step 4: The first few steps of the wizard are self explanatory. Select the following options from the successive dialog boxes. Create a new answer file; Windows unattended installation (Select the appropriate Windows version); "Fully automated"; "No this answer file will be used to install from CD"; and finally, accept the license agreement.

Step 5: Under the General Settings, you can customize the installation of Windows by providing the default name and organization, display settings, time zone and the product key. Fill in the fields using the drop-down list or by keying in the details. If you don't select an option from the drop-down list, the default values will be used.

Step 6: After you are done click Finish and save the answer file as "winnt.sif" when you are prompted. Advanced users can further tweak the answer file by referring to the Help file called Ref.chm in the same folder.

Step 7: Finally copy the answer file to i386 folder in the Windows XP installation folder you created in the beginning.

Step 8: To burn a bootable installation disc, you need the boot sector of the Windows XP CD. Download it from here bootfiles.zip

Step 9: Launch Nero and select CD-ROM (Boot) from the New Compilation dialog box. Under the Boot tab, specify the boot sector file you downloaded and extracted. Set the emulation as "No emulation", and keep the boot message blank. Most importantly, remember to set the "Number of loaded sectors" as 4.

Step 10: Under the Burn tab, set the write method to disc at-once. Click the New button to to begin adding files and folders to the compilation. Drag all the contents of the Windows XP installation disc that you copied to your hard drive (with the answer file in the i386 folder) into the left pane. Insert a blank CD into the optical drive and hit burn button. Your windows automated installation Disc is ready!

Boss Mode in XP

This tool helps you to close all running applications with one click. It does not use system resources because it only flashes a ‘close’ signal to all open windows on the desktop and then ceases. Just place a shortcut to the tool in the Start Menu, Quick Launch or elsewhere.

Close All Windows Screen shot

You can always add a hotkey to this shortcut. It is really very handy if you are running ~20 applications and want them all to quit instantly. It works just as if you were pressing the close button for each application.

Decrease your Applications startup time

By default, Microsoft includes the /prefetch:1 switch to speed up it's Windows Media Player application start time. This switch can be used for other Windows applications and also many third party programs.

Example #1

You have AOL 8.0 installed on the computer. Complete the steps outlined bewlo to add the /prefetch:1 switch to AOL's Target path.

1. Right click on the AOL shortcut and select properties from the menu.

2. In the Target: Field add the /prefetch:1 switch to the very end of the path, like this: "C:Program FilesAmerica Online 8.0aol.exe" /prefetch:1 and then click ok.

Now start AOL. It would load at least 50 times faster than ever before.

Example #2

1, Go to the Start button/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools

2. Right click on System Restore and select properties from the menu that appears. Add the /prefetch:1 to the Target Path entry so it looks like this %ystemRoot%System32restorerstrui.exe /prefetch:1 and click ok.

Now System Restore will start immediately when executed.

Note: This switch will only work with some programs. Others will return a message saying the program in the target box is invalid. Just remove the switch

Speed up your web browsing

Iv'e personally found a dramatic increase in web browsing after clearing the Windows XP DNS cache.

To clear it type the following in a command prompt: ipconfig /flushdns

Load Internet Explorer the fastest way possible

Edit your link to start Internet Explorer to have -nohome after it. For Example: "C:Program FilesInternet ExplorerIEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome
This will load internet explorer very fast because it does not load a webpage while it is loading. If you want to go to your homepage after it is loaded, just click on the home button.

Turn Off Error Notification of Script Error

Only the webmaster has to know about every single script error. To turn off the error messages that pop-up, do this:

1. Go to Tools, Internet Options. Click Advanced on the far right.
2. In the browsing set, you should see one that says "Display Notification of Every Script Error". Uncheck it if its checked.
3. Also, click "Disable Script Debugging" to stop that, also.

Web pages slow down, FIX.

The tweak is simple. Beside the QoS and others around the Internet for the new XP OS, I found out that native drivers sometimes slow you down (cable and xDSL users). So if you have applied all tweaks and you are still having slow downs try reinstalling your NICs drivers.

I have reinstalled my NIC drivers (I own a CNET generic NIC, native driver is installed with OS) with the latest found on their website, and now I can really apretiate all my available bandwith. The difference is noticeable. My web pages now load almost instantly where they used to take even a minute!

As allways, this tweak worked well for me, but may not work with everybody, just try! You can go back to native drivers anytime.

Good Luck!

Add Internet Explorer Toolbar Buttons

Use the following step's to add your own browser tool bars. You can add links to any programs on your computer oh to any web page (wehackers.blogspot.com) for example.

1. Go to Start, Run
2. Type in gpedit.msc
3. Go to user configuration - Windows Settings - IE Maintenance - Browser UI. Then click on browser toolbar customizations.

Notes: You will need 2 icon files (ico files) one color and one grey for the mouse over.
